Reviews

Birder's World Magazine, December 2009; from "New books worth reading--A year-end roundup of bird books that belong in your library"

"This ABC guide to birds introduces young readers to the avocet, cuckoo, eagle, loon, quail, and many other species. The author's short, lively commentaries about each bird, told from the bird's point of view, appear next to his exceptional photographs."

Gary Bogue, Contra Costa Times, September 30th, 2009

""A MUST book for young future bird lovers!"

My View:

This book is amazing! I was expecting your run of the mill "A is for .... and B is for..." kind of book. But even the cover was a shock, the quality of the pictures are good enough that you could frame and  hang on the wall. Each picture is truely beautiful in themselves and even my 3 month old was kept interested at the vibrant colors each one had.

I was amazed by the content as well, this was not at all what I expected. This book you would think is for young ones but I even learned some facts I never knew. And considering that I am an avid bird watcher that says alot. My older kids loved learning about each bird. They really liked that the book was written as if each bird was talking about themselves. (My 10 year actually changed his voice for each bird the second time the book was read. Which was really funny for the "Blue Footed Booby")

Since we had only a E-Book to review my computer has been left on so the kids can come back to read it again and again. They loved going back and doing the Who's Who Challenge at the back of the book. Which I was happy about because it meant they were taking in the facts and enjoying the book too.

Also towards the end of the book is a listing of all the birds again which gives even more facts! Which my kids also read. I kept hearing "Hey Ma, Did you know......." and " Did ya know that this bird......." I love books that have my kids so engaged that they are constantly talking about it and absorbing what they have read.

I personally think that a copy of this book should be in every household, even if you do not have children it is amazing! It reatails for almost $20.00 but it would be a great investment.

You can eve go to his website for further information and activities.  My kids are going to be trying the DIY bird suet. They are really interested in the " Squirrel Riddler" but I am not sure they will do it, we really like feeding the squirrels too and they may feel bad about putting the secret ingredient in. ( You will need to visit the website to find out about what I mean by secret ingredient)

Also at the website is more links for learning about birds and a "Teachers Section" that is still costruction.

I was not compensated by any means for this book review. My view is strictly my own.
