We visited our local thrift store yesterday. My daughter always looks through the bins that they leave out marked "Free". There are amazing finds when the thrift store decides to do an overhaul on the store, which happens every other week or so.
The pickins were pretty slim, so I thought. My daughter eyed two binders covered in colored used duct tape. She begged and pleaded for me to let her take them. I could not for the life of me figure out why she would want two beaten up and torn binders. After walking through the store and continuing to hear "Mom, PLEASE!", I gave in. "Fine, go get them. Like we don't have enough broken, torn up items at home already"
When we got home, she quickly got to work tearing the colored duct tape off of the already ruined binders. I ignored her, as she was tearing the strips into even smaller strips and hanging them off every available surface edge she could find. Arg! I had bigger fish to fry with the other kids trying to play football in the house!
After, about an hour I hear my daughter say "Ma, Look!" Here is what I saw when I walked into the room.
She was able to make all of this and still has some duct tape left on the two binders! Unbelievable, how she was able to take something that I considered "garbage" and turn it into this!
The pictures below show a very big ring she was able to make. You can also wear it!
I honestly have no clue how she was able to pick the colors the way she did. Each of these turned out BEAUTIFUL!
I have learned a couple of lessons from this experience.
1.) Always look at "garbage" twice before deciding anything. I would never have imagined this possible had I not seen my daughter create these.
2.) NEVER underestimate any child! They have the imagination of geniuses if given the chance
3.) Always pay attention: I now have to beg her to tell me how she did it. All she says to me "Well, if you hadn't ignored me, you would know how to do this."
I am sure there are many more lessons that I learned from this. I am really going to have to suck-up to her, so she can write up a tutorial.
