Jake is a jeek—part jock, part geek—who finds out he’s an unwitting target of genocide against a secret society known as the Druids—a society he didn’t even know he belonged to.
O’Brien, one of the last druids, is his mentor. Unfortunately, he is a dud when it comes to magic, but at least he is ex-military.
As for picking his girlfriend . . . well, that’s a split decision. Alexis and Kendra are opposites in almost every way.
Now, if he can just survive the nightwalker—an obsidian-skinned creature with a thirst for blood and a banshee’s mind-destroying scream, who wears a cloak black enough to make the grim reaper jealous—then he might have a chance.
Ultimately, protecting his loved ones, and himself if possible, becomes his priority.
My Reaction:
There are some stories that you need to take the time and commit to reading. Fire Light is one of those books for me, it may start off a little a bit slow but it makes up for it a few chapters in. This could be for many reasons my age being the main one. My oldest son, about the same age as Jake was able to relate to the book immediately and finished it in two days.
I took a few days longer, because prying him away from it proved difficult. I have never had to fight one of my children to read a book before, so that leaves me with the conclusion that it was a slow-starter because I am not in the right age-range. Fire Light has all the components to keep young adults and adults engaged until the very end. I enjoyed how the book was able to end, leaving a great start to the next novel in the series.
My son loved being able to relate to a teen boy that "felt" as if he wasn't normal. Even though it turns out that he isn't normal, the author captures the essence of teenage concerns, feelings, etc spot on. The action, mysteries, and outcomes are woven wonderfully throughout the whole book.
We both recommend this book for anyone that loves to read "Urban Fantasy" genre. I can easily see this being a favorite among all young adults and perfect for those that like the "misfit" characters. My son is looking forward to continuing this series, that says a lot considering my son reads very little.
