Ongoing New Spring Project

We signed up at this website over the weekend. I think the kids are going to more than love doing this! But I am waiting till the warmer months, I can not see myself trampling through the snow trying to find what could be small, frozen items. I really am not such a great cold weather person.

But come spring time this really would be a great addition to any nature studies we may be doing. Now I suppose to make this a bit more difficult task - you could do this without a GPS. Google maps seems to do a good job in still making this a good treasure hunt. I really like the decrypting messages that the kids can do as we write down our clues nad destination for each cache. Anyhow, on with the information about this project.

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.

Getting Started with Geocaching

Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS unit can then try to locate the geocache.

Easy Steps to Geocaching
  1. Register for a free account.
  2. Click "Hide & Seek a Cache."
  3. Enter your postal code and click "search."
  4. Choose any geocache from the list and click on its name.
  5. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS unit.
  6. Use your GPS unit to assist you in finding the hidden geocache.
  7. Sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location.
  8. Share your geocaching stories and photos online.

So if anyone decides to do this, we would love to hear about your adventures in the wild. Please leave a comment and tell us about it.
