Though she regretted breaking the spell, Naomi said, “It is getting cold.”
Chaz rubbed his hand along her arm and felt her skin prickle as if chilled. “I will
get your shawl.”
“This is a first.”
“Why so?” he asked as he returned carrying her wrap.
She blushed. “No man has ever been in my room.”
Draping the shawl around her shoulders, Chaz drew her into the circle of his
warmth and whispered, “Once Sunday comes, your room will always have a man in it.”

“Then I will never want to leave that room.” Naomi smiled at him. She pulled
him so close, it seemed to her that every time his heart beat, hers answered. Pondering this blessing, her heartbeat doubled, throbbing with desire. It is the most natural thing to ask him to do after all we are married…What could be more natural than making love tonight? Knowing that all she had to do was ask, she opened her mouth, ready to…

Chaz kissed her. “I see that you want something, but fear asking me. To put your mind at ease, I promise whatever you ask, I will do.”
This is not how I want to begin my marriage, she told herself as she pulled away.
“Now, about my name!” she exclaimed, forcing herself to think of something else.
“I love a woman with a one track mind, but you already told me about that.”
Chaz kissed her. “I think you need your family, Naomi.”
Chaz kissed her. “I think you need your family, Naomi.”
She teared up. “They are lost to me.”
“All we have to do is find them.”
“I do not know how to do that.” Tears filled her eyes. “Besides…what
would I say to them? I failed to fulfill my vow to God.”

“What do you mean?”
Naomi shivered. “When I left, it was to find mí tío…my uncle Arturo. I planned to
help him make enough money to bring them here. I never said goodbye. Never told them why I left. Since I failed, I fear they will be angry with me because I left and never looked back!” she insisted, as a chill caused her teeth to chatter.
Chaz pulled the shawl tightly around her, and held her close. “Sweetheart, your
body betrays your need. You are shivering from your unspoken desire to be with them.”

“You are too good to me.” She cried as she clung to him.
“It is that double blessing of yours working overtime.”
“Yes…like mi papá told m…” Naomi began to shake. “I am so….”
Picking her up, Chaz hurried into her bedroom, put her on her bed, and covered
her with every blanket he could find while she shivered from head to toe. “

“Call…Maria,” she whispered, “she….knows…”
“I will tell her to get here pronto!”
Naomi forced a smile and closed her eyes. By the time Maria arrived, Naomi was asleep. Maria and Chaz sat in the kitchen and waited for Naomi to wake up.
“What happened?” Maria asked while they drank some tea.
“What happened?” Maria asked while they drank some tea.
“We were having a lovely evening. Naomi told me about the double blessing
implied in her name, and I learned how much her papá loved her. As she spoke, I realized how much she longed for her family. I told her I would find them, but she feared their reprisals. Whiling trying to help her overcome her fears, she began to shiver uncontrollably.”

Hearing Naomi call for Chaz, Maria whispered, “Naomi’s chill was probably an
emotional reaction to you telling her that you could make her dream come true.”

“Are you sure?” He stood and motioned for her to come with him.
She shook her head. “Ask her yourself. I’m in the kitchen if you need me.”
Chaz rushed to Naomi. “Mi ángel dulce…my sweet angel, are you all right?”
“Yes,” she whispered. “I am sorry I scared you.” Tears ran down her
“If you are all right, then why are you crying?”
“Because of you…my fifteen year wish to help my family…can come true.”
Chaz sat down, and pulled her close, happy that she was not shivering.
“Mind if I come in?” Maria said as she shook her thermometer. “Now open wide,” she told Naomi. “Yep! That’s what they call me at the hospital…the ‘open wide nurse,’” she said, while notating Naomi’s vitals. “Since everything seems alright, I’m going home to help the boys get ready for football camp tomorrow.” Checking the time, she chuckled.
“Since it’s after midnight, I mean today.”
“Thank you for coming,” Chaz said as he started to stand.
“Don’t leave her. I know my way out.”
Hugging Naomi, Chaz insisted, “You are never allowed to scare me like that again!
Comprendes?”
“Sí, I understand.”
“Since Maria said I was not to leave you, we will spend the night together, you
under the covers, me on top of them.”

Naomi noticed Chaz’s haggard look. “If you…lie down on your own bed, I will
understand.”

“Naomi, I am not leaving this room tonight unless you are with me! Is that

“Yes, Chaz.” Closing her eyes, Naomi snuggled into the blankets, and fell
asleep. Morning broke, clear and bright, the birds chirped and Naomi slept. Day three, Chaz told himself hoping the countdown to their special day would give him something positive to think of. Yet as he entered the kitchen and brewed some coffee, wishing the aroma would wake her up, all he could think of was how worn out she looked. At ten, Maria let herself in, and walked to the kitchen. “Good morning, Chaz. How’s our patient today?”

“All we can do is wait.” Downing her coffee, Maria hurried to Naomi’s bedroom
and took her pulse. As Chaz entered, he saw her take out a stethoscope and listen. “She seems all right. Let’s move her to the parlor where she can enjoy watching you coming and going. I’ll open a window so she can hear the birds singing since she enjoys that.”

“I think she would prefer the arbor out back.”
“Between the shaded arbor and the cool breeze I felt walking from my van, she
might catch a chill.” Maria saw Naomi’s eye flutter open. “She seems all right.”

As Naomi opened her mouth to say something, Maria placed her thermometer in it, and checked her pulse. She motioned for Chaz to follow her into the hall. Seeing that Naomi had closed her eyes, Chaz closed the bedroom door. “Naomi’s temperature is a little low, so I suggest she rest, eat light, and keep warm. I’ll come back tomorrow to see how she’s
Chaz walked her to the front door. “Thank you.”

“As a nurse, I feel confident in waiting this out.” Maria opened the door to leave.
“If she’s not back to herself by tomorrow, we’ll ask Doctor Montoya to make a house call.”
“That sounds like a good plan.” Chaz closed the door.
